Social media has become a habit of many. It has become a platform where people are able to communicate with one another and stay in touch. Not only that but a way for people to express themselves on current topics in this world and read about things that are happening currently. As people use social media as a news source, it replaces the norm of journalism. Although, it brings up questions on whether social media is replacing traditional media.

Personally, I feel like social media has become the norm for many to get news sources but I don’t think it will replace traditional media. The reasons are because advertisement will always be a thing and using different types of media will only help the brand. Social media like Facebook have ads while scrolling the feeds and it’s a form of marketing strategy based on what they think you’ll be interested in based on what is clicked. Looking through the ads that pop up for me, it is a pretty accurate representation of things that I have clicked.

According to Shirky's points in Cognitive Surplus, people do things for their own satisfaction. I agree with this as people lean more towards what they can engage in instead of consuming. People are into doing what they care about or like and that can be part of the reason why many are still using social media. An example is Facebook, Facebook lets the user express what they like and engage. In this case, sharing with one another guides more to stay using Facebook.

In a way, people are motivated based on things that are shared and people use this to their advantage. Like advertising or marketing, information that is shared can be shared when they think will help their brand or company. In this case, the information that is being shared is controlled by releasing the information when the brand or company wants to. People are motivated to do things that they will enjoy which can result in sharing content with one another. Like Shirky says, people will always lean towards what they like or want to do. As people's interest is peaked from the advertisement that is out there whether it’s social media or newspaper, people will want credible sources. News from newspapers gives one that satisfaction. Although, it does not mean social media and newspapers can’t work together and complement each other. As a result, People's motivation is pulled which will result in them engaging in what they desire which is why I believe traditional media won’t change.
